Addressing journalists at Ngegu trading centre on Sunday, the elders raised concerns over what they termed as deteriorating security in some parts of the country. The elders said that the government has mechanisms which it should use to ensure safety for all Kenyans.

Led by Simon Mwangi, the elders condemned the Garissa University attack where students were massacred on Thursday morning.

“We want to express our condolences to the families and relatives of the students who were brutally killed by militiamen. Time has come for the government to tackle terrorism head on and terrorists’ sympathisers must also be dealt with,” said Mwangi.

Mwangi added that terror elements are threatening the stability of the country and that the government must wake up to the reality.

The elders said that the country has enough trained security personnel who should be deployed to guard porous borders.

In addition, the elders asked the country’s security agencies to work together and share information that will help thwart terror plans.

“The security of Kenyans must not be joked with. Leaders who are sleeping on the job must be sacked,” said the group.

Timothy Wachira, another elder, also asked the national government to coordinate with county governments on matters security.

He said that county leaders must be involved in implementing security strategies to effectively combat terrorism and general crime.
