Kiambu County deputy governor Mr Gerald Githinji has called on the national government to disburse the money set aside for El Nino mitigation to counties.
He said this while speaking during a Physical planning meeting in Thika’s craver’s hotel on Monday noting that the delay has hindered management of the effects of the rain.
Although Kiambu County has not experienced much effect of the rains, the deputy governor urged the President through the Ministry of Devolution to speed up and wire the money to the county governments’ account for it to help those affected.
“We have already profiled the names of those affected and we shall instantly help them after we receive the funds. There are places we need to improve mostly Kalimoni and Thika East among other places where the rains have caused slight landslides,” said Githinji.
The deputy governor, who heads the Disaster Management department, said that the El Nino issue came shortly after budget was passed adding that all money had been budgeted for.
“We have written a proposal to the County Assembly requesting it for supplementary budgeting to cater for El Nino funding and allocation,” he said.
He, however, said the department of Disaster Management is ready to instantly respond to any immediate cases that may arise from the heavy rains striking most parts of the country.
“Despite lack of funding, my department and the disaster management team are vigilant for any emergency that may spring up,” said the deputy governor.
Meanwhile, he asked the residents to avoid hazardous places and report any crisis to the administration for action to be taken.
