Kiambu County and the National Construction Authority (NCA) might be to blame if Kiambu experienced a scene like the one experienced in Huruma where a six storey building collapsed.

This is as a result of ignorance from both the County government, NCA and the residents.

Despite the disapproval of construction and buildings by the authorities, the residents have continued to reside in the houses while others expand their businesses in the marked premises.

Contrary to what many expect, the residents paint the houses after they are marked by the government authorities such that they continue using the premises without anyone noticing.

Others just ignore the disapproval and notice by the county government and go on with their businesses without bothering the mark by the county government.

Samuel Munene, a business person in Makongeni in Thika sub-county explains that he has continued to operate from a marked house because the area has been hit by insufficiency of business premises and thus he has no otherwise.

“If you wander around this area searching for a business premises you will be shocked that no room is vacant at the moment. We have no otherwise other than operate from the buildings despite being marked by the county government,” he said.

Helen Wambui said that despite the residential building, she resides in being marked by the NCA, she still went ahead and rented a room in the building as she had no otherwise at the moment.

“The residential houses are not enough due to the increasing number of students in Thika and we are forced to reside in house that they mark,” she added.

Earlier in Kimbo, Ruiru sub-county, a cracked house was disapproved for residence and the court upon visiting the scene ordered an immediate demolition of the house and two others which up to date have remained in the area and being used for residence.

However, some of the residents blame the authorities for failing to act on the building owners as they mark the houses to threaten the people who later bribe them and re-paint the houses getting rid of the marks.
