The Government, through the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries has stepped up efforts to empower small scale farmers by strengthening their production capacity.
This is in an effort to enable them contribute to the overall objectives of attaining food security in the country within the shortest time possible.
CeC for Agriculture in Kiambu County Dr Monicah Mukami Waiganjo said measures being undertaken include building appropriate benchmarks for improvement of existing irrigation programmes.
She said this was informed by the realisation that food security had to be achieved, if economic development in the county and the country was to be guaranteed.
Waingajo said experiences the world over had demonstrated that for double digit economic growth to be achieved, all available agricultural potentials had to be exploited.
“We in the executive have, therefore, resolved to empower the ordinary farmer with necessary inputs, merchandise and awareness to enable them contribute effectively to standards that have been set by the Government,” she said.
The county executive was speaking at a agricultural conference in Kiambu on Thursday at the conclusion of a four day fact finding tour of agricultural development projects in Githunguri, Lari and Kikuyu sub counties.
