Kiambu has marked the annual adult literacy day in a colorful event attended by hundreds of learners from all over the county.

The event at Ruiru stadium was themed ‘Literacy for Improved Livelihood’ and it aimed at eradicating illiteracy and giving learners a source of income.

Kiambu County director of adult education, Martha Kiriako, assured that the government is dedicated to ensure that every learner who did not have the chance to go through the formal education can acquire a certificate through the adult education programme.

“The learners study at their convenient time and do not have to wear uniforms,” said Kiriako.

“Those willing to get a Kenya Certificate for Primary Education (KCPE) or Kenya Certificate for Secondary Education (KCSE) can do so in a programme that does not take the usual eight or four years.”

In a speech read on behalf of Education Cabinet Secretary Jacob Kaimenyi, the ministry has developed a curriculum for training the teachers and instructors of adult and continuing education programme.

The Adult Teachers Education Curriculum will ensure that adult education instructors are equipped with the right skills that will ensure professional content delivery.

Jackson Abdi from Kajiado County, who is currently living in Kiambu, said it was a great opportunity to pursue education regardless of age.

Teresiah Wambui, another adult learner, teaches the students how to make table mats and ornaments during their free time. They sell the products for extra income. Others are involved in farming which they displayed during the event.

The learners are also partnering with Rafiki Microfinance Bank to save their money and get loans.

During the event, Limuru Technical were awarded the trophy for being the best overall.
