Kiambu County government today joined the rest of the world in marking the World Environment Day together.
The county government partnered with the Thika Law Courts, National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) and businesses within Juja, Ruiru and Thika sub-counties to plant trees in the area.
In an event graced by the county deputy head Gerald Githinji and the environment CeC Esther Njuguna in Kalimoni ward, the county government facilitated the planting of over 1000 trees which supplemented the 750 trees which had been planted earlier in the area by the Kenya Forest Service.
Speaking during the exercise, deputy governor Gerald Githinji said that the residents of the semi-arid parts of Kiambu County should adopt the tree planting exercise to help in changing the climate in the area.
He added that the areas have been faced with lack of rainfall as other areas experience heavy downpour thus the residents have not been able to plant thus forcing the county government to supply them with relief food.
The environment executive member said that her department has been in the frontline since the tree planting exercise was launched by governor Kabogo in Kiambu town thus making it easy for the public to get seedlings to plant.
Njuguna has further called for joined efforts in protecting the global environment sustainability so as to supplement the piped water supplied by the county government
She added that a healthy environment translates to wealth.
