Two medical officers in Kikuyu sub-county have been arraigned in a Kikuyu Law Court for selling cholera vaccines that the government had offered for free. The prosecution desk told the court on Tuesday that on May 30, 2015 Kikuyu residents tipped off police officers about the two were selling the cholera vaccines which were supposed to be issued for free.
Police launched investigations and discovered that the two medical officers who operate clinics in the area were indeed selling the vaccine and arrested them at around 9am.
The first accused, Francis Mukwana pleaded guilty to the charges and the second accused Joshua Kiriswa also pleaded guilty to the charges. Mukwana in his mitigation said that he was sorry for having committed the offence stating that he was a family man and his wife and children depended on him.
Kiriswa in his mitigation also pleaded with the court to forgive him stating he needed the money.
He said that he had a wife who had breast cancer and needed treatment which was expensive hence forcing him to get to commit the crime. However, Chief Magistrate James Ogweno sentenced both of them to one year in jail with no fine. “Both of you will serve a year in jail with no fine. However, you have 14 days to appeal the ruling,” said the magistrate.
