Kiambu County government is set to introduce new laws in the Kiambu Alcoholic and Beverages Act to strengthen the fight against illicit brews.
The new introductions will also see stricter regulations against sale of counterfeit alcohol.
According to the incoming act, bars and restaurants with a ‘No Smoking Zone’ signs within their premises will have to pay a fine of half a million as it poses a threat to human health.
The act also stipulates that bar operators who insist on selling alcohol to already drunk persons will be slapped a fine of Sh 50,000 or serve six months in jail or both.
The Kiambu Alcoholic Control Board Director Michael Kang’ethe said that his department is very keen on the implementation of the laws to ensure that they fully regulate the consumption of alcohol in the county.
He said that they have partnered with the Kenya Bureau of Standards (Kebs) to eliminate all the counterfeit products on the market. He added that Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has supplied them with enough validators to make it easier to identify un-taxed products.
Kang’ethe, who was speaking in Thika Town on Monday, said that his board has been supportive in the fight against illicit brews and have been going round apprehending all the unlicensed operators.
“We have been working as a team to seize all the brews in the county. We have been able to destroy thousands of cartons and litres of the unwanted alcohol. We hope to emerge the victors in this battle,” he said.
Over the weekend, the group led Governor William Kabogo in destroying alcohol in Ruiru.
