Thika MP Ms Alice Ng’ang’a has called on candidates vying for various seats within Kiambu County to exercise political maturity and restrain their supporters from spreading baseless propaganda against their opponents.
Speaking at Kilimambogo after presiding over the issuance of over 1,750 title deeds to Mukunike and Giciiki squatters, Ng'ang'a lamented that politics in Kiambu County has taken an ugly trend where paid hooligans are infiltrating campaign meetings of their opponents in a bid to spread fear and despondency.
She urged politicians to stop propagating political hooliganism especially against female opponents.
“Heckling, booing and outright anarchy are being witnessed in Jubilee campaign meetings. It is being orchestrated by independent candidates who lost during the April Jubilee party nominations and jumped sheep to vie for various seats in the coming elections,” the legislator said as quoted by KNA.
“Independent candidates who were defeated in the Jubilee nomination exercise appear set to wreak havoc in this region but we are calling upon them to exercise tolerance as August 8th will come and go but Kiambu County will remain”, she said.
Ng’ang’a noted that violence and destruction of property which has been witnessed in various parts of the county is barbaric and backwards and should be condemned by every peace loving person.
“We are calling for maturity restraint and peaceful campaign meetings devoid of violence and name calling because “Wanjiku” is the one with the vote and no amount of intimidation will stop the voter from exercising their democratic right,” she said.
“Thika has never gotten to this level of political hooliganism where name calling, propaganda, outright mudslinging and lies are being peddled both in public barazas and social media forums", lamented the Jubilee MP.
