Kiambu Women Representative Gathoni Wa Muchomba has raised an alarm over rising rape cases across the country.

Wa Muchomba says the defilement cases being reported across the country should be a cause for concern for the government and relevant agencies.Speaking to journalists in Kiambu Town on Thursday, Wa Muchomba asked the government to investigate and take stern action taken against perpetrators of rape.She said that young girls have been left at the mercies of defilers with no one to help them."The government should act swiftly and take stern action against perpetrators of rape and defilement,” she said.Wa Muchomba also called for the sacking of teachers who have been accused of defiling students. She said that female students are no longer safe as rogue male teachers take advantage of their positions to defile them.The MP also called for stiffer laws against perpetrators of rape and defilement. The Jubilee lawmaker said that the sexual and gender-based offences laws are weak and need to be strengthened in order to tame rape.She said that rape is a serious offense and perpetrators should not be allowed to roam freely.On Wednesday, Mosa Mixed Secondary School principal Matuvi Kimanzi was charged in a Kitui court with raping a female student. Mr Kimanzi was released on a Sh 50,000 bail.This comes as investigations continue on the alleged rape of a student at Moi Girls School in Nairobi. The school was closed on Sunday last week after reports that a student was raped.
