Members of Parliament from Kiambu County have rejected the process through which the Kiambu County government is approving the bars in the area.
The legislators who attended meetings conducted in six sub-counties on Thursday said that the county government has not been including the residents of Kiambu in the vetting of bars and thus has approved some illegally.
Led by Thika MP Alice Ng’ang’a, the lawmakers called for a fresh exercise in the areas that have already been completed.
Among the MPs in the meetings were Mr Francis Munyua (Juja), Mr Kimani Ichung’wa (Kikuyu), Mr Jude Njomo (Kiambu town) and Mr Ferdinand Waititu (Kabete).
Speaking in Thika Community Hall, Njomo said that the residents have noted that they don’t want any bars in residential estates or any bar within 300 metres from any learning institutions.
He added that they will not allow any wine and spirits shop licensed in Kiambu as the drinks have been claiming the lives of alcoholics before the President ordered for action.
Gatundu south MP Moses Kuria said: "We should all respect the presidential directive. Kiambu Members of the National assembly will not stop in their fight against the second generation illicit brews. Those siding with them should get warned.”
The meetings are set to continue throughout the county.
