Kiambu government has signed a partnership with an Israel-based Avocado company that aims to encourage and promote avocado farming in the county.
The partnership with ‘Guri Avocados’ will see the company establish a modern avocado nursery facility in Kiambu where farmers will get avocado seedlings at subsidized rates.
Speaking during the signing of the partnership at his office on Tuesday, Governor William Kabogo said that farmers will also be given skills on avocado farming.
He said that the Israel Company will also establish an avocado factory in Kiambu once farmers embrace farming of the fruit.
“Our partnership with Guri Avocados Company is meant to encourage farmers to embrace avocado farming,” said governor Kabogo.
The Kiambu governor said that farmers will be able to supply their produce to the company at good prices.
According to Kabogo the modern avocado nursery plant will be set up at the Waruhiu Agricultural Training Center and will be managed by the county government.
Guri Avocado’s Managing Director, Amram Cohen said that the company they will directly work with farmers.
He said that avocado has good incentives which can help boost the living standards of locals.
Avocado contributes 17 per cent of the Kenya’s export especially to the European market.
Israel Ambassador to Kenya, Yahel Vilan who witnessed the signing of the partnership said that Israel will continue to work with the country on development.
The Israel ambassador observed that Israel is funding various development projects across the country.
