Kiambu County will soon roll-out a free milk and a slice of bread program for lower primary school children in all public schools, the county’s governor Ferdinand Waititu has said.
Kiambu County is expected to be the first one to go back to the old, milk for school children, a system first in place during the regime of the former president Daniel Moi.
Speaking during a meeting convened by Kiambu County Executives, MCAs and stakeholders, Kiambu County governor Ferdinand Waititu said that the program is aimed at making the pupils comfortable at the school and also help their physical growth. “This initiative has a lot benefits not only for the kids but also for the entire county. It will help improve the health of pupils and also create employment for Kiambu residents through dairy farming and baking industries,” said Waititu.
According to governor Waititu, dairy farmers will be assured of a ready market for their milk products within their reach once the program kicks off. Waititu said that the program is designated for the public schools alone and not for the private schools. The governor did not reveal the timeline when the program will start.
The governor added that unemployed women in the county will be provided with baking equipment to locally manufacture bread, which will be sold to the county government for pupils’ consumption. However, the Governor said the county has enough funds to ensure that the program and other major projects are successful. Is there a newsworthy accident, incident or event happening in Kiambu that you want Hivisasa to cover?
