President Uhuru Kenyatta is serving his second and last term even as succession politics take center stage ahead of his retirement in 2022.
The president is the Mt Kenya political kingpin and various politicians are lining up to succeed him once he retires in 2022.
According to political analysts, the battle to succeed Uhuru as Mt Kenya political kingpin is fierce among politicians in the region.
Peter Ngure a Kiambu based political analyst and commentator, says that the succession politics will play out until the election Day in 2022.
According to Ngure, the following Kiambu politicians have the political muscles to succeed Uhuru as the Mt Kenya political kingpin.
William Kabogo: He is the former Kiambu governor and among the most experienced politicians in Mt Kenya region. Kabogo lost his re-election bid as Kiambu governor to Governor Ferdinand Waititu.
The former governor is considered Uhuru’s political confident and loyalist.Kabogo was once quoted saying that he is one of the politicians who convinced Uhuru to contest for presidency in 2013.
Kabogo also commands a huge following across Mt Kenya and has been quoted as saying that it will not be automatic for the region to back DP Ruto’s presidential bid in 2022.
Kimani Ichung’wa: He is the Kikuyu MP serving his second term.Ichung’wa was declared MP unopposed in last year’s general election since no other candidate had declared interest in the seat.
The vocal politician is also a trained accountant and an ardent supporter and defender of President Uhuru Kenyatta’s government. The youthful politician support base comprises of youth and women.
There are claims that he could deputize Deputy President William Ruto in 2022. Ichung’wa has assured DP Ruto of Mt Kenya's support in 2022.
Ferdinand Waititu alias ‘Babayao’: He is the Kiambu County governor having been elected in last year’s general election. Waititu is a darling of many Kiambu and Mt Kenya residents owing to his fight against illicit brews and outlawed liquor.
The governor is also a close ally of President Uhuru Kenyatta and has assured Deputy President William Ruto of Mt Kenya support in 2022.
