Youth Polytechnics in Kiambu County will be managed by degree graduate principals in order to raise the bar in skills taught in the institutions and also improve their quality of education.
Governor William Kabogo revealed this while addressing the press at his office after holding a meeting with education stakeholders.
Kabogo said the county has taken over all the 105 instructors who previously managed the 21 polytechnics in the region.
He said for one to qualify to be hired as a principal of a youth polytechnic they should have attained a university degree since the nature of courses offered will be highly specialised with the graduates being equipped ready to become job makers.
“Those who do not make it will however be demoted and deployed within the institutions,” said Kabogo.
The governor also decried the huge deficit of skilled craftsmen in plumbing, masonry and other trades whose demand is on the increase due to the many development projects being undertaken all over the country.
He said the way youth polytechnics had been run in the past, had played a negative role in making majority of the youths to shun them.
