Kiambu County residents have been advised to embrace the benefits offered by the sun following the increase of health disorders that can be prevented or treated by sunbathing.
Speaking on Monday in her office, Ruiru District Hospital medical superintendent Mrs Penninah Kibuti said the healing science of the sun through sunlight rays offers a number of health solutions to both young children and adults.
Kibuti explained that heliotherapy, a treatment used to cure diseases through sunlight rays is cheap, readily available and did not require the patient to travel to hospital for prescriptions thus could be of great help to the public.
"Sunbathing toddlers during morning hours of between 7am and 8am for not more than 15 minutes could bring about health benefits such as reduction of bilirubin levels in the blood, teeth strengthening, promotion of bone health and support of the immune system," said Kibuti.
The medical specialist said that sun bathing children under the morning sun could be the easiest and cheapest way to prevent disorders that may affect them due to vitamin D deficiencies which is richly offered by the sun.
The doctor also pointed out that sunlight is very beneficial to adults as it cures skin diseases such as psoriasis, acne, management of eczema and also helps the human body from dementia and fast brain aging.
Kibuti also advised blood pressure and depression patients to practice sunbathing more often as medical research had proven that sunlight will lower their blood pressure and help in cure of depression.
