Thika district nutrition officer madam Gladys Mugambi, also said that they are planing to develop a legislation that will allow the local sugar industries to import the vitamin A concentrate duty free from the world manufacturers.

She was speaking at her office on Wednesday in Thika. She said starting this month there will be mass campaign of giving children aged 0 - 5 years healthy food supplied with vitamin A.

She noted that electrification process of enriching cereals with vitamin A industrially can denature the vitamin B1. She added that food fortification does not involve changes in eating habits as such, it is easy to implement.

Florence Ngahu, a nutritionist in the department said dietary diversification approaches are more sustainable economically, feasibly and culturally acceptable than supplementation and fortification.

Ngahu encouraged mothers to promote breastfeeding as this milk has the vitamin A content and most important for children in the 1st year of life.
