Kiambu County Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) coordinator Aluisa Kimani has asked residents in the area to come out and register as voters.
The coordinator also encouraged residents to attend forums being conducted by the electoral body in order to get information about the electoral process.
Speaking at a local hotel in Kiambu town when he opened a voter sensitisation forum on Friday, the IEBC coordinator said the electoral body is conducting countrywide campaigns to sensitise citizens to register as voters.
He said massive campaigns are ongoing where Kenyans who have reached the voting age will be sensitised and encouraged to register as voters ahead of the 2017 general election.
Kimani said that the commission is largely targeting youths.
He observed that many youths have reached the age required to register as voters but many are reluctant to participate in the process.
“As the electoral body we want to encourage citizens especially youths to get Identification Cards (IDs) so that they can register as voters,” said Kimani.
Kimani said that the law requires one to have a national ID or valid passport before he or she can register as a voter and subsequently take part in elections.
He said that voter registration campaigns will be taken to schools, community barazas and churches across Kiambu.
The coordinator at the same time urged politicians to help convince and encourage youths to apply for ID cards for them to register as voters.
“We are going to use all the available means to ensure that citizens are registered and have knowledge about the election process,” he said.
Kimani also said that the IEBC is ready to clean up its image and win the support of citizens as a non-partisan electoral body.
