Speaking in her office on Friday, the Water Resource Management Kiambu Sub Regional Manager, Rose Nyamori said that their main mandate is aimed at ensuring the sustainability and proper use of water resource to promote clean water for human and animal consumption.

She added that locals should take advantage of the short rains in the country to help in sustaining their livelihoods, further explaining that the county has some water hitches in different parts and this would be very beneficial since it would help in economic activities such as garden irrigation during dry seasons, at a time when the weather patterns are unpredictable due to global warming.

Nyamori emphasized that the residents of Kiambu County should concert their efforts towards water harvesting, citing that Kenya in general, according to the United Nations, falls under countries with scarce water levels and resources, something she says can be improved if people harness water harvesting.

Due to the scarcity of water levels in the country, she mentioned that proper water management strategies are vital not only for those in farming and arid areas.

“Water resources are natural and everyone has a mandate of maintaining these catchment areas. Floods can also be harvested and put into proper use for irrigation projects and this will boost food security as well,” added Nyamori.

The officer reiterated that they have created an awareness to push farmers and people living in arid areas within the county to come up with proper water harvesting techniques such as, roof harvesting and sand water harvesting.
