More than 60,000 commercial sex workers are based in Kiambu only according to the statistics given by District Aids and STIs Control (DASCO) officer Mr. Oscar Ndombi.
Kiambu is rated as the second town in promiscuity in Kenya the first being Malindi where it has more than 80,000 commercial sex worker.
Thika being the major contributor of the statistics where 45,000 are based in the sub county with only 319 men sex workers who are gay.
Mr. Ndombi said that Thika has two centers that support sex workers where WAPATE initiative is the major contributor and Afya Plus Kamili being the supplier if the condoms in the region which he has extended his gratitude.
“I want to appreciate a job well done by the two centers in Thika, WAPATE and Afya Plus Kamili for the persistent support to the sex workers,” he said.
According to the officer, Thika is the only town being fed by the superhighway thus many entrepreneurs come to invest attracting many sex workers in the region.
He went ahead to explain the rights of the sex worker in Kenya stating that, “Kenya government guarantees that all Kenyans, including sex worker s have the right to choose their own employment and enjoy the same type of protection as other service workers.”
He challenged the police officers who have been harassing sex workers saying that every Kenyans have the right of bodily autonomy and he or she has the right to do what pleases him or her.
“Those officers who have been terrorizing sex workers their days are numbered and we shall make sure they are brought to book,” warned the officer.
Mr. Oscar Ndombi was speaking on Wednesday during the celebration to mark the international day to end violence against sex workers in Thika town, Mama Ngina garden.
