Kiambu Senator Kimani Wamatangi on Thursday addressed a growing concern from the residents of Kikuyu over the constructions of the southern bypass.
The residents were concerned that the construction of the said road would leave the town with no access of a convenient inlet and outlet for motorists.
“We visited the town as the transport senate committee over the fears of the Kikuyu town being cut off from transport infrastructure, and I want to assure the residents that we are following on that matter,” said Wamatangi.
He emphasized the need of the Kikuyu people to have a town that has one or two inlets and outlets, and avoid a case like that which happened to Gilgil town.
“Gilgil town has grown rather slowly because as the Nairobi-Nakuru highway was constructed, the town was left a distance away since traffic using the highway do not have direct access into the town,” said Wamatangi.
Kiarie Kamau, a resident of Kikuyu said the construction of the Southern bypass was almost complete, with painting of the road going on and there were no signs that there would be an inlet into the town.
“The senate committee assured us that an inlet into the town would be made available, but I do not think this will happen following the construction already done,” said Kiarie.
The senate committee visited the town to assess the road, hours before the death of Homabay senator Otieno Kajwang who was part of the committee.
The committee had promised to liase with the Ministry of Transport and the China Roads and Bridges Company on the matter.
