Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu is on the spot over what nominated Senator Isaac Mwaura has termed as 'open theft' of public funds.
This is after it emerged that the county government has been spending over Sh70,000 daily and Sh500,000 a week to fuel vehicles used in the fight against illicit brews.
Geoffrey Kaara, the alcoholics drinks directorate boss, however, says that the money is 'not much' considering the impact the initiative has had since it started.
"We use Sh70,000 every day to ferry officials from the alcoholic drinks control department in raids on bars and other joints. I don't think it is much," said Kaara on Tuesday, as quoted by the Standard.
Kaara noted that they have offered employment to youths, some of whom he says have been rescued from alcohol abuse.
The county government is also said to be spending Sh2 million daily to pay 5,000 rehabilitated alcoholics. The addicts are paid Sh400 daily to do manual jobs like clearing bushes and trenches as well as collecting garbage.
Waititu defended the move saying it is bearing fruits and asked those against it to start their own initiatives.
"This programme is meant for the public good and it is not going to stop. Those fighting it have selfish interests. Those leaders castigating me over the programme should come up with their own projects and leave mine alone," Waititu said in Githunguri last Thursday.
The programme will have scooped Sh300 million when it ends after six months.
Those opposed to it include Thika Town MP Patrick Wainaina who argued that it is a 'bad idea to give cash to alcoholics'.
His sentiments were reiterated by Kiambu Woman Rep Gathoni Wamuchomba who claimed the programme 'isn't achieving much'.
