Teachers have been advised to derive new mechanisms of imparting skills to slow learners in order to ensure that they don’t drop out along the way.

Adult and continuing education officer in Gatundu North Jacob Wanyoike noted that most slow learners feel out of place thus rendering them hopeless and finally causing them to drop out from schools for idleness.

Wanyoike observed that not all students have the same understanding capacity and thus teachers should give them more time to understand certain concepts of learning.

The officer revealed that most teachers in primary, secondary and adult classes ignore the slow learners and continue with the syllabus at the pace of the bright students.

He advised such teachers to offer free tuition sessions for the slow learners and encourage them that they are still good students regardless of their speed in class.

"It’s a norm that has been there. Most teachers tend to think that after some bright students get to understand what they are teaching they move on with the syllabus without giving time for slow learners," he said.

"It’s my advice that if a student seem to not to completely understand a certain concept that you don’t discourage him or her by ignoring them. Give them more time and further advise them to try out technical courses like mechanical, welding and driving that they may end up being good and will help them to survive in the future," he added.

Wanyoike who was speaking on Wednesday from Kamwangi town said they had received Kshs. 500, 000 to improve the facilities for adult education in the area from the county government of Kiambu.
