The Kiambu County Executive Committee member for Environment, Dr Joseph Muthike has cautioned hotels owners in Mukiriti market in Thika town against draining their septic tanks into open drainages. Muthike has directed owners of storey buildings in the town to manage their liquid waste properly or their premises will be shut down until they comply with the law. He said some property owners were discharging raw sewage into open drainages when it rains posing a major health hazard to river water users in the region that essentially create diseases like cholera. Speaking to the media in Thika town on Thursday, Muthike said lack of a sewerage system in the town was the genesis of the waste management problem for the sub-county headquarters. “Those whose septic tanks are full should seek the services of licensed exhausters to empty them and ensure their premises are kept safe,” he said. He said proper measures must be put in place to ensure water is safe from contamination from the raw sewerage to avert possible outbreaks of waterborne diseases in the county. The County government he said was in the process of ensuring a sewerage system for Kiambu and Thika towns was in place to improve liquid waste management.
