Businesspeople in Kiambu County have urged the Kenya Power to look into the regular power cuts which are negatively affecting business in the county.
The call comes a day after another power outage hit the county paralysing business operations.
Joyce Wachira, a businesswoman who owns a cyber cafe and a saloon in Kiambu town, said that this is not new to them as they have been experiencing this problem for a long time.
“I usually incur a lot of unnecessary expenses by using a generator in the event of a blackout. Sometimes the outage can last the whole day,” said Wachira.
Michael Rurigi, who operates a butchery in the town, said that the recent blackout was the worst to be experienced in the county so far.
“The blackout lasted for more than 12 hours. I incurred huge losses since I had to throw away meat which I had stored in the freezer. By morning it was already bad,” Rurigi complained.
The power outages also affect the health services that are offered at the Kiambu General Hospital as it has only one generator that caters for the children incubator machines. This is according to nurse Josephine Moraa, who added that the hospital is unable to carry out some important tests when there is no electricity.
Moraa said this makes it difficult to attend to patients with special complications.
The businesspeople have called upon the Kenya Power Company to take their grievances positively and address the matter to avoid incurring more losses.
