Charcoal transporters in Kiambu County have protested against the move by Kitui county government to ban transportation of charcoal.
Juja Transporters Sacco chairman David Macharia said the county government imposed the ban without consulting them saying the ban is affecting their business.
Macharia said it was unfair for the county government to make the decision without involving the stakeholders.
Speaking to the press in Juja on Monday, Mr Macharia said the government has barred them from moving through Kitui county while hauling charcoal.
The chairman said they risk being arrested if they are caught transporting charcoal from other counties through Kitui.
“The county government did not give notice prior to the ban neither were we consulted. We have the required licences and permits to transport charcoal,” said Macharia.
The chairman further said that 15 trucks transporting charcoal from the county were impounded and the county is yet to release or charge them in court two weeks later.
“We demand that the trucks that were impounded to be released. The traders have licences and permits to transport charcoal and they had paid cess and charcoal fees to the county government and we have the receipts,” he added.
