Kiambu women representative has cautined women in the area against shylocks saying they have defrauded many residents of their properties.
Speaking during the launch of Kiambu Women Network in Kiambu town on Friday, Annah Nyokabi said many women had fallen victim to the illegal money lenders.
She said the shylocks were offering easy loans thus attracting unsuspecting customers and end up fleecing them.
The women representative said the shylocks were taking advantage of the gaps that have been brought about by devolution.
She said unlike before when the national government used to arrest them, the devolved government has not tackled the issue.
Nyokabi said the shylock business is booming in the county, adding that plans are underway to kick them out.
She advised residents to consider joining groups so as to be in a better position to secure loans from accredited financial institutions instead of going to shylocks for credit.
She encouraged women to develop a culture of saving, adding that they will look for ways to train the groups on basic financial literacy and money management.
Nyokabi called on the women to join groups so that they can benefit from government funds such as Uwezo Funds and women enterprise funds among others so as to be able to access loans to empower themselves.
Nyokabi also advised the women to register companies so as to be able to benefit from county tenders, as promised by the government.
