Women from Igegania in Kiambu County have engaged in rabbit keeping as an alternative form of farming.
Speaking at Igegania location, Chania Ward, Gatundu North, Mary Gathoni, the chairlady of Igegania Women Group, said they got involved in rabbit rearing to support their families and avoid depending on their spouses for financial support.
“Our group decided to venture into rabbit farming to enable our families to have additional income,” said Gathoni.
She noted that the money they generate after selling rabbits goes into meeting their daily activities including paying school fees for their children.
“A mature rabbit can fetch Sh 1500 and in a month we sell at least 20 rabbits making more than Sh 30,000 which is shared among the members,” she said.
She added that apart from generating extra income, the rabbits provide nutritional value in their families' diet.
“We no longer spend money in buying meat from butcheries; we use rabbit meat to improve our diet,” she said.
She urged women to form groups and start rabbit farming as the cost of maintenance is relatively low.
