Youth in Kiambu sub-county have been urged to join youth polytechnics in order to gain technical skills which will enable them to be self reliant.
Speaking in her office, Kiambu sub-county youth officer, Charity Githinji said despite the low transition rate of pupils from primary school to secondary schools in the sub county, the youth polytechnics which offer alternative training to those who miss out secondary school opportunities are registering low admissions.
Githinji further explained how the youth polytechnics in the sub-county have been refurbished and equipped with the necessary equipment to offer competitive training to the youth.
She revealed that that there are competent trainers in the institutions who are ready to offer the technical skills.
The youth officer asserted that courses offered in the polytechnics are charged much lesser than those charged in private institutions offering the same courses.
She called upon parents within the sub county to support their sons and daughters to secure chances at polytechnics so as to prepare them to take up opportunities in the narrowly skewed job markets or create their own jobs.
“Parents support for their sons and daughters to join polytechnic is imperative as it will give them green light to thrive in the dynamic and demanding life. After completion of their studies, graduates can exploit their acquired skills and knowledge to make differences in their lives,” said Githinji.
She said, of the youth polytechnics within Kiambu Sub-County, Riabai polytechnic offers a range of practical courses such as dressmaking, mechanic, clothing and textile, welding and carpentry among others.
