Speaking during the event on Tuesday, the local leader urged the residents to take the seedlings and plant them due to numerous benefits that comes with them.

“Please, let us take these ‘Hass’ species of the avocado tree and plant them. The ‘Hass’ tree is disease-resistant and it will benefit our farmers who delve in agri-business," Githongo said.

He added that farmers will earn a living from the avocados after harvest since there is a ready market.

"Farmers should take advantage of this rainy season and those parents who own large pieces of land, kindly, allocate our sons and daughters farms so that they can too can plant these trees," he added.

Also, the MCA thanked the youths who turned up in the meeting and took the seedlings.

He noted that if the youths are given land to plant the trees, they can also benefit and even earn a living from the same.

Many of the youth have tossed themselves into drugs and crime as they do not have something to do with their lives.

“We are so grateful to receive these ‘Hass’ seedlings today. Our kids will also benefit health wise and financially. As you can see, the trees will survive for a long time; thus, long-lived benefits," one beneficiary said.

The Hass variety is resistant to diseases and has a good market in the United Kingdom. They are also rich in minerals and proteins, and an ideal source of cholesterol.
