Youth in Kiambu County have been urged to shun drugs and instead engage in activities geared towards empowering them.
The call was made on Tuesday by Thika West Youth Development Officer Laban Mwangi, in an interview with Together As One Group which whose Uwezo funds progress was monitored in Kiandutu slums.
Mwangi said the youths must be cautioned against over indulgence to drugs especially Miraa and bhang.
He said lack of job opportunities among the youth should not be a reason to engage in the vice adding that they should be innovative and start income generating activities especially with the presence of aiding funds like Uwezo.
Mwangi said he has kept his strength by shunning alcohol and cigarettes, which he said is a great contributor to the deteriorating health of many young people.
Area development Officer Evelyn Muthoni who also attended the progress monitoring program said the youths should emulate ‘Together As One Group’ in ensuring they keep away from substances that are destructive to their health.
She said particularly the youth must keep away from bhang and miraa which slowly affect the performance and other youthful duties. The group that sells Bananas in Kiandutu was commended for its immense growth and rehabilitation of youths who were ones alcohol addicts and creation of three other job opportunities for youths in Kiandutu slums area.
The progress monitoring program is expected to happen to all Uwezo funds beneficiary groups in Kiambu County before commencement of the repaying period that is set to start come June this year.
