Former President Mwai Kibaki who was admitted to the Netcare Sunnighill Hospital in South Africa on Sunday is responding well to treatment.
Kibaki suffered what is believed to have been a stroke on Saturday night. He was rushed to the Karen Hospital and spent a night there before being flown to Johannesburg by and Amref Flying Doctors air ambulance on Sunday.
His doctor, Dr Dan Gikonyo, who is based at the Karen Hospital accompanied him to South Africa.
Netcare hospital is reputed for having some of the best medical facilities and top cardiologists in South Africa.
“He is doing very well and we hope he will be released from hospital before the end of the week. He is in a very upbeat mood,” a source close to the family said.
The former President was also accompanied by cardiologist Josiah Ruturi, and his last born son, Anthony Githinji.
Leaders from across the political divide have wished Kibaki a quick recovery.
"We wish the President speedy recovery and encourage his family to stay strong at this trying moment. Get well soon Mr President, our country still needs you," Cord leader Raila Odinga said through Twitter.
Raila worked with Kibaki in the Grand Coalition government as the Prime Minister.
President Uhuru Kenyatta also asked Kenyans to pray for the former president.
“Let us pray for Kibaki so that he recovers quickly and returns home. Let Kenyans emulate my father, Kibaki and others for their selfless service to the nation. These are great people who should be remembered at all times, whether in or out of office,” he said during the 38th Anniversary Memorial Service of Mzee Jomo Kenyatta at the Holy Family Minor Basilica, Nairobi.
