The Kenya Meat Commission (KMC) has started rehabilitation of its Kibarani and Athi River abattoirs to boost its capacity.

The meat processor is expected to spend 3.4 billion shillings in an exercise that will double the daily capacity of Kibarani abattoir to 300 head of livestock while the Athi River plant would increase to 1,000.

The rehabilitation also seeks to install state of the art equipment at the Kibarani and Athi River plants as well as automating the factories.

Rehabilitation works at the Athi River abattoir will cost taxpayers 2.4 billion shillings while modernization of the Kibarani plant will cost Kenyans 600 million shillings.

Managing Commissioner Joseph Learamo says the rehabilitation will help increase the slaughter capacity of the meat processor’s two plants.

Learamo called for support from government owned institutions as well as members of the public to help revival efforts of the factory.
