The Muungano Association allegedly incited Kiandutu slum residents to protest against the erection of a perimeter wall at Kianjau Primary School on Wednesday.
The protests led to chaos and demonstrations outside the Kiambu County governor’s office with the association being accused of advising the angry residents not to vacate the land unless they are compensated approximately 500,000 shillings each by the county government.
According to George Njuguna, an elder at Kiandutu slum, the association is funded by a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) based in Kibera which claims to protect the rights and interests of slum dwellers.
“The association is funded by an NGO based in Kibera who have come to help build toilets and offering loans to the residents,” Njuguna added.
Julius Githinji, the head teacher of Kianjau Primary School narrated that the land initially belonged to Kianjau farmers who gave seven acres of the land to the community for a development project.
He added that an organisation called “Macheo” decided to sponsor the construction of several classes and when the area MP Alice Ng’ang’a came to launch the construction of the perimeter wall, some homes happened to be inside the school land because of the beacons which were placed by Kianjau farmers.
Daniel Waiguru, the area chief of Makongeni condemned the association claiming it was distorting the truth since the land belongs to the school community.
“The land belongs to the school and it is unethical to demonstrate over a land which you do not even have a title deed to. If diplomacy will not work, force will be applied remove them,” he said.
