Lydia Ombati is a dedicated young lady who believes that women have the potential to prosper in life just the way men do.
She works as a hair dresser at Kibera's DC area for over 3 years now and is still at it.
In an interview, Ms Ombati said she ventured into the profession since she never got a chance to study. She said when she was young, she had dreams of becoming a nurse but her dreams never came through because she never managed to go to school. She only completed her primary education and from there, she never got a chance to join secondary because her family was poor.
"After primary education, I joined a salon course where I trained for 6 months and before I knew it, I had learnt all the styles. I later moved to Nairobi at a tender age as a house girl in Umoja where I worked for 2 years. It is from this house girl job that I got to buy equipments for my saloon,’’ she narrated.
She noted that she used the money she had to buy equipments and opened a saloon herself now. She used sh15, 000 to start the business.
With the income from her trade, she is able to support her family and parents, who are in the village.
"I make money to support my family Youths should create jobs instead of looking for white collar jobs that are hard to get," she said.
