Landlords who own residential houses constructed the houses without knowing the map of the area on which they are constructing the houses.

This comes after residents, who were given a notice to move from their houses before he demolishing process begins, for road construction and expansion.

The residents say the notice caught them unaware and it will be too costly for them to vacate to rent new houses because these days, getting a vacant house to rent in the slums is very hard.

“Landlords who intend to construct residential houses in future should construct their houses far away from the roads. Read the land map clearly before constructing houses. Some people construct houses before getting the area map. In most cases, many houses constructed are on the roads or where the road will pass. This affects tenants who have no place to move to,” said Michael Mutinda, a resident in the slums.

Mutinda argued that the landlords will not compensate them since they will incur losses vacating to new houses.

“Landlords should ensure that next time houses are constructed on a proper location after reading the map clearly to avoid constructing houses on road sites. It is now going to be very expensive to move the property for the tenants from their current living premises to new premises because demolishing of houses near roads will be done any time for road expansion,” said Mondester Mogesa, another resident.
