His opponent, Mike Jacobs accused Owino of rigging the elections. He said that Owino mobilised youths from Kibera and Mathare slums to come vote for him. The goons then interfered with the election.

Jacobs supporters too said the elections were rigged to favour Owino. Owino got more than 18,000 votes whereby Jacobs said the polls were marred with massive rigging.

The claims by Jacobs have, however, received negative critics from Kibera people who say the university management should offer an apology to the slum youths.

‘‘We might be from Kibera but our minds are not as stupid as that Jacobs thinks. How can Owino come to Kibera and mobilise youths to vote for him? I mean, Kibera youths have nothing to do with the university’s affairs. If most of the youths here have never set foot in the university, how could they go vote for Owino? Kibera youths are civilised and not goons,’’ said Victoria Likani.
