The fire that destroyed property worth millions of shillings is believed to have started at 3am on Tuesday.

Okoth was speaking on Tuesday when he visited the scene where he asked the victims to report the total damage to the Disaster Management and Land offices immediately so as to be compensated. He said those whose houses were burnt would be given enough money by the end of the day that would help them secure a place to sleep and purchase food.

He also revealed that his government would buy school uniforms for the affected school children and give capital to the affected business persons so that they can resume their jobs. He, however, refuted claims that the fire was caused by an electric default alleging that they already had a witness who claimed that there were smells of petrol before the fire erupted.

“We will leave no stones unturned till we find and arrest the criminals who started the fire,” he said.

According to an eye witness, Charles Magike who guards neighbouring premises, the fire might have been caused by faulty electric cables in the timber yard.

“I saw sparks of fire coming from the timber yard before an explosion was heard. The fire then spread fast due to the dry wood and was accelerated by the wind,” said Magike.

The fire spread to the neighbouring mabati houses leaving over 60 families homeless, but no fire brigade or fire tanker was available to help the residents put off the inferno.
