Kibera residents have been facing water shortage problems for a while now and are now tired of the same routine.
The residents say they are forced to wake up early and walk long distances in search of water.
The heavy downpour that was received on Wednesday in the slum brought a bit of happiness to residents, especially those who were at their living premises by the time it was raining. The rains, which fell for more than 2 hours, brought about flooding rainwater on the ground. On noticing this, Fredrick Ouma, a landlord at Karanja village in Kibera advised his tenants to harvest and store rainwater to use for domestic purposes to reduce the expenses of buying water from vendors who are selling water expensively.
Speaking on Wednesday evening, Ouma said that tenants should take advantage of rain water if at all they want to save some money mostly used to buy water every day.
"It is good that the rains have come back and as tenants harvest rainwater to use. In the last few minutes water shortage has been experienced in the slums, now that rainwater is free, harvest it and store it for use,’’ Ouma said.
"Make sure you store water after harvesting and use it carefully to reduce the water buying cost. It is a blessing that rain is back and the problem of water is coming to an end. It is your mandate as tenants to make use of rainwater that is free," he concluded.
