Residents of Kibera have called on the government to settle the growing Migingo island dispute before it gets out of hand.
The residents said that this matter would have been settled a while ago if the government had addressed this problem when it first arose.
‘‘If right now people are moving away from the island because they fearing for their lives, what will happen in the future,’’ said Helen Akinyi, one of the residents.
Another resident, Beatrice Awino said some of her family members live there and totally depend on fishing to earn a living. She said she is afraid that the family members will soon be chased away from the island if the government does not settle this matter.
Daudi Odongo, on the other side, thinks negotiations will help end the conflict. He has advised the government to visit the Ugandan government and have talks on how the Migingo Island will be used by both Uganda fishermen as well as Kenyan fishermen.
This comes days after an assistant chief was arrested by the Uganda police. An AP police too is reported to have been arrested. During the voter registration exercise, two IEBC clerks were arrested and their property destroyed by the Uganda police.
