More than 100,000 Kibera residents are looking forward to getting more clean water after a local development organisation partnered with Safaricom to make an innovative cheap water distribution system.
The system will see the water supplied through overhead pipes supported by wooden poles as opposed to the underground supply that was otherwise seen to be more strenuous on resources.
Shining Hope for Communities (Shofco) Executive Director Kennedy Odede thanked Safaricom for coming on board and said that more development was in the pipeline as long as the community maintained close relations with the private sector.
“Collaborative efforts between communities and the private sector provide a transformative opportunity to address key societal challenges. We are grateful to Safaricom Foundation for partnering with Shofco as positive change agents in Kibera,” he said.
Kibera residents have in the past relied on water vendors who exploit them by charging higher fees and introduction of the programme will be a relief to the area.
