The pipes used by the Nairobi Water Company are said to be fake as many of them wear out within a short period of time.
The residents of Mashimoni area in Kibera have urged the water company to use pipes that are resistant to fungal attacks and other soil living organisms to prevent blockage and contamination of water.
The residents led by Jared Ouru said they have been going through hard times of water shortage in the area. This might be due to the blockage of water pipes as a result of fungal attacks.
"There soil living organisms that are capable of breaking up the water pipes used to transport water from water sources to Kibera. Animals such as moles and rats eat up the pipes and this makes them break and contaminating the water in the process,’’ said Ouru.
Another resident, Jennifer Ndewa said, ‘’I urge residents to boil water before use. Let the relevant authority use water pipes that are not be easily attacked by fungal or other soil living micro-organisms.’’
"We need free flow of water to Kibera. This will only be achieved if good quality pipes are used to transport water from water sources to Kibera. We are suffering but no one is out ready to help. The Nairobi Water Company should improve on the pipes they are using during water connections to Kibera slums and other areas," said Maurice Elijah, a resident.
