After the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) identified nine counties of being at risk of violence in 2017, safety measures have begun being taken all over.

Among the said counties was Nairobi with Kibera being marked as a possible violence zone. The NCIC termed Kibera as a troublesome and problematic zone. However, NCIC chair, Francis Ole Kaparo said the commission will work hard to ensure that violence is not witnessed. He revealed that the commission will employ 100 people who will be deployed in the 19 counties to monitor security.

Kibera residents have, however, differed with the report saying that the slums are safe and residents don’t intend to be violent at all.

‘‘The fact that Kibera suffered during the 2007/08 post-election violence does not mean that we are still violent. People here have changed,’’ said Joseph Nyaga, a resident.

Another resident, Richard Omollo called on his fellow residents to work together and love one another to ensure that violence does not prevail. He said violence kills development and that is not a way to solve conflicts.

‘‘We learned a lesson in 2008. We cannot continue living as enemies. The IDPs here are yet to be compensated. Why go back to the old days when we know how it will be hard for us to heal,’’ added Suzie Owino.
