Residents of Kibera are facing hard times due to the shortage of fresh vegetables that has brought about prices rise abnormally at Laini Saba market.
A spot check shows that prices of all types of vegetables at the market have risen from the previous prices.
According to traders at the market, they have been getting low supply of products such as tomatoes, Irish potatoes and cabbages for the last 3 weeks and the rise of the prices has since taken effect due to the high demand from the customers. They also said the crisis is as a result of the dry spell in the source market upcountry that led to shortage of the farm products hence the low supply from suppliers.
“I normally purchase vegetables in the market. But when I see my vendor selling at a high price I wonder where our country is heading to, a tomato costs sh10 unlike before where it cost sh5,” said Marisela Odour, a customer.
“How many tomatoes can one buy to serve the family of six 5 people? Even if the cost of production is high with low supply from suppliers’ traders should not take advantage and hike prices abnormally,” said Mama Linda Obese, a mother of 5.
She further noted that before they used to buy dania sh2 per piece but now the price has risen to sh5.
