Residents of Kibera slums have lauded telecommunication company Safaricom for their recent move to pump Sh12 million into a water supply project in the area.
Speaking from the area where Safaricom CEO Bob Collymore recently launched the project that has seen locals access clean water, the residents said the Safaricom Foundation had relieved them of a problem that had haunted them for long.
"Accessing clean water in the slums has been a challenge. Despite the many NGOs working to change the lives of Kibera locals, water provision has been a threat. The Shofco water project will see many people benefiting. Safaricom has done a good thing to the people in Kibera as this will soon end the water shortage problem in Kibera," said Purity Oduor, a resident.
Another resident, Lukas Chege, noted that the project was a sign of light in the slums and urged other NGOs to work hard to change the lives of the people in Africa's largest slum.
"Shofco water project is among the projects that locals have been waiting for and more projects are coming. Soon people will see Kibera a transformed place since we expect good houses to be constructed in the slums," he said.
More than 100,000 locals will benefit from the Shofco/Safaricom water project.
