Residents of Kibera on Tuesday cautioned athletes from attending the Rio Olympics due to the fear of the spread of the Zika virus.

The games which are scheduled for August 5-21, 2016 could fail to have Kenyan athletes show up after the head of Olympic Committee said the team might withdraw from the games due to the Zika virus fear.

The National Olympic Committee chair, Kipchoge Keino, said  he will not risk taking the athletes if the virus will have reached the epidemic level.

One of the Kibera residents, Yolanda Mwenje, said it is better for the athletes to continue training but be ready for anything.

''If they will be told to stop attending the games then they should understand that they were told so because the country cares about their health,'' she said.

Nicolas Ongeri, another resident, said it is better to prevent the runners from attending the Olympics than letting them go and getting infected.

''The virus has no cure. It is better for them to avoid being infected rather than acquiring the virus and infecting others,'' he said.

Winnie Nyakundi, however, said it is too early to cancel the deal. She asked the athletes to be ready for anything.
