Isaac Mariita, an electrician in the area said illegal power connections in Kibera slums have risen in the past few months and its consequences have not been good. Property has been lost due to illegal power connections by residents who tend to steal electricity from neighbours thus causing fire due to poor connections.

He was speaking this morning at Dc area in Kibera.

This comes after a fire broke out on Sunday at DC area, Tuff Gong that saw more than 20 business stalls and houses burnt down.

“As residents, kindly contact the person who has skills to connect the power for you instead of connecting it illegally,” advised Mariita.

“People connect power illegally to boycott paying monthly electricity bills but they end up stealing power from neighbours which in return bursts due to poor connections thus causing fires,” said Mariita.

He concluded by stating that residents should report anyone who connects power illegally to the relevant authority for a disciplinary action to be carried out.
