As the clock ticks faster towards the 2017 general elections, Kibera residents are becoming wary of tribal politics that national and regional leaders engage in.
Recounting the charring ordeal they went through in 2007/2008 post poll chaos, a group of elderly men in Olympic Shopping centre, Kibera expressed fears in the way political leaders are causing tensions in the country.
A businessman in the area, Daniel Owino, said that what the country went through in the previous elections is something that he wishes would never have taken place in the present day Kenya, but sadly voices out his worry that the trend might re-appear again in the 2017 general elections.
Citing the recent complaints by the opposition to have the IEBC commissioners removed from office, Owino asserts that if nothing is done prior to the elections then the opposition and its supporters will definitely fail to concede defeat if at all they do not win. He said the government should consider engaging the Cord opposition in dialogue since their concerns could have a reasonable ground.
Over the weekend, deputy president, William Ruto was quoted saying the Jubilee coalition shall remain in office by all means. Such statements are what Kibera residents say are breeding hatred and suspicion among the Kenyans. However, the residents are determined to preach peace in their area since their experiences from the past poll skirmishes are still fresh in their minds and souls.
