Nairobi County has set aside Sh84 million on to fund poultry farming, greenhouses, and rabbit keeping projects in the city with the objective of engaging the youth in financial and self-empowerment projects to curb joblessness.
According to Bernard Mugenyo, the CEC of Agriculture, Sh34 million will be channelled to setting up the first ever poultry slaughterhouse in the county and generally develop the sub-sector.
Another Sh10 million will be directed to construct at least ten rabbit units, a venture that the county government seeks to undertake in partnership with various women and youth groups.
Regarding the specific localities where the projects would be situated, the CEC revealed that revealed the rabbit projects will be established in the informal settlements of Kibera, Korogocho, and Mathare.
"We shall be targeting highly populated areas where the rabbit projects will be initiated and we hope this will finally earn income for the young unemployed people,' said Mugenyo.
The Nairobi County government will initially manage the projects and thereafter hand them over to local community beneficiaries.
