Kibera residents have urged Kibera traders to lower prices of their merchandise so that customers can buy them.
This comes after traders raised prices for their products claiming that it is a dry and hard season for survival, thus, increased prices, especially for food products. According to Nelson Omondi, a resident at Kibera's Makina village and a frequent customer to both Laini Saba market and DC market, there is a problem especially when it comes to buying food items from traders due to the abnormal rise in prices.
''Traders should not increase prices of commodities from time to time. Getting money is not easy. For instance five leaves of sukuma wiki costs sh10 unlike before where a handful cost sh10. One tomato costs sh5 and previously three tomatoes cost sh10. One tin of maize costs sh90 to sh95, unlike in other areas where it costs sh60 to sh70, why the rise in prices?'' asked Omondi.
He added that in the last one month, Kibera traders have been rising prices abnormally without knowing that the economy is also hard for the customers.
"If the prices will not be lowered in the next one week, I am going to stop buying commodities, especially from Kibera traders. I would rather go and buy from traders at Kangemi, Kawangware and Uthiru,'' said Mercy Kiprono, another Kibera resident.
